James Floyd Upper Lake Loop

Enjoy an easy walk along and across a peaceful lake at James "Sloppy" Floyd State Park with the Upper Lake Loop trail. The park also offers more difficult hikes, boat and canoe rentals, fishing, and playgrounds.

Begin this hike at the Picnic Area parking lot. You can also park at the Pinhoti parking lot and take the short Backcountry Trail to connect to this loop. Be sure to pick up a free map in the office across the road on the other side of the lake. At the end of the parking lot, head downhill following the signs and the purple blaze. The orange blazed Marble Mine Trail will split to the left but stay to the right.

The trail follows along the lake, never getting very close, but not very far away. The trail ends at a large grassy field on the south side of the Upper Lake. From here you can make this a loop by walking along the lake and at least partly along the road or just turn around and retrace your steps. Either way, make sure to head across the lake along the extended boat dock.

If you want a little longer hike, try the Marble Mine Trail or Lower Lake Loop or even the more difficult 4 mile Marble Mine Loop.

There are several parking areas in the park but for this trail park in the Picnic Area Parking Lot just north of the Park Office on the opposite side of Sloppy Floyd Lake Road. You can also park at the Pinhoti Parking Lot a half mile south of the park office. The the short Backcountry trail from here to connect to this loop.
Notes
Trail maps are available for free in the park office just on the other side of Sloppy Floyd Lake Road.
To make this a loop you have to walk along Sloppy Floyd Lake Road for a decent portion of the hike. You can walk along the edge of the lake but some sections are steep and impassable. You can choose to retrace your steps instead of making this a loop.

Better as an In and Out
I listed this trail as a loop as that's what the park lists it as but half the loop is along the road or along the steep hillside. Neither are fun to walk along. If you are looking for a short hike here, just walk along the trail part and retrace your steps. That part is fine.
